The GIA 4 Cs of Diamonds

Carat Weight

Carat is the unit of measurement for a diamond's weight. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger diamonds are rarer and generally more valuable, though carat weight alone doesn't determine a diamond's quality.

Colour

The GIA colour scale runs from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). Colourless diamonds (D–F) are the most rare and valuable. The differences between grades are subtle and best evaluated by a trained gemologist.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. The GIA clarity scale ranges from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3). Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and only visible under 10× magnification.

Cut

Cut is the most important of the 4 Cs — it determines how well a diamond interacts with light. An excellent cut maximises brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Cut refers to the quality of the angles, proportions, and finish.
